2D Games

2D, short for two-dimensional, refers to a visual or digital representation that lacks depth and exists only on a flat plane. This spatial dimensionality is typically represented by a coordinate system with two axes: the x-axis (horizontal) and the y-axis (vertical). Objects and characters in a 2D space can move and interact with each other on this flat plane, but they do not have volume or a third dimension. [1] 2D visuals are commonly used in various forms of media, such as comics, illustrations, and video games.

Games in particular can greatly benefit from the 2D format. Often, 2D games feature side-scrolling or top-down perspectives, allowing for simple yet engaging gameplay. The absence of complex 3D graphics enables faster development, lower system requirements, and higher framerates. They are still capable of telling rich stories and creating immersive worlds, albeit with a different aesthetic. Jailbreak [2] and Terraria [3] are notable examples of 2D games that have attracted a dedicated player base.

Modern game engines have made it easier to create 2D games with 3D-like visuals, offering a more polished and visually appealing experience. This has increased the popularity of 2D games, as seen with the proliferation of indie game titles and their critical and commercial success.
